AITUC delegation, Arjuna Awardee Roshibina call on Manipur Governor

IMPHAL: A delegation of All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Manipur led by its General Secretary L. Sotinkumar Singh along with five other members called on the Governor of Manipur, Anusuiya Uikey at Raj Bhavan on Friday and apprised her of the prevailing situation along the national highways in the State.

The delegation informed the Governor about the insecure environment on the national highways that transporters, drivers, helpers, and the people have been facing for the last many years and especially during the present unrest, the situation has worsened.

They said extortion, looting, abduction and killings by miscreants and UGs are common phenomena and prices of commodities are skyrocketing due to these factors. Advocating the need for the establishment of a dedicated force, they said the Highway Protection Force is the only hope for safeguarding the national highways and therefore, steps to implement it should be initiated at the earliest.

The team submitted a representation to the Governor and requested to inform the Prime Minister and Home Minister in this regard.

Governor Uikey while giving a patient hearing to their demands said, this is a genuine problem and State and Central governments have been trying to restore peace and normalcy so that people from all walks of life can live in a peaceful environment.

She said that issues of extortion, looting, abduction especially along the national highways etc. have been discussed with the Security Advisor, the Chief Secretary and the Chief Minister and steps to control all forms of disturbance were also informed by the Government. The Governor assured the delegation that she would apprise the issue to the Prime Minister and Home Minister and asked them to meet with the Security Advisor.

Arjuna Awardee Naorem Roshibina Devi (Wushu) along with her coach and parents also called on the Governor at Raj Bhavan Friday evening. Governor Uikey congratulated Roshibina on her achievements and the honour she received and wished her grand success in her future career, bringing laurels for the State and the nation as a whole.

Governor Uikey thanked her coach and parents for their support to Roshibina and announced extending financial help of a sum of Rs.1,00,000 (one lakh) to Roshibina Devi.   

On the other hand, M.H. Khan, Addl. Chief Secretary along with two officers called on Governor at Raj Bhavan on Friday and apprised her of the current status of Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) in the State and discussed the activities taken up under the ADCs. The governor informed the officers that she would visit the hill districts in the month of February.
