Jorhat 4 June : Majuli Police on Saturday arrested Assam police sub-inspector (SI) Junmoni Rabha, who had arrested her fiance on charges of fraud last month in Nagaon district. Majuli police arrested her in connection with a case in which her fiance was accused of criminal conspiracy and cheating against awarding contractual work with ONGC. Ramabatar Sharma and Ajit Bora, two contractors, had filed separate FIRs against the police officer's fiance, Rana Pogag, alleging massive financial transactions between them. In their FIR they had mentioned that SI Rabha introduced them to Rana and that it was because of her that they gave Rana the money in exchange for sureity contract work from the ONGC. Rabha was posted at Majuli at the time.

Rabha has been arrested after 3 days of continuous interrogation and sent to 14days police custody on Saturday. Before being arrested talking to reporters she said that her fiance not only exploited their relationship but also planted her in his crimes.  With tears in her eyes, she pleaded being innocent and said that  paid heavily for trusting a fraudster whom she was engaged. On being asked how more than 20 lakhs cash were found in her Canara and Axis Bank saving accounts, Rabha said, ' My fiance Rana told me that he is an extravagant person so he wishes to save miney for wedding in a separate account and requested me to open an account at Canara Bank and control it. Another saving account was decided to open in a private Axis Bank for it's quick and better service. Both accounts were opened with my personal credentials but was operated by Rana. This is how he lied and planted me in the money trail'. Rabha confirmed allegations by her mother that Rana even took away Rs. 1 lakh from their home immediately after the engagement ceremony, which was kept for the ailing brother's treatment.

It is reported that atleast seven FIRs have been lodged against the officer alleging corruption and cheating with her fiance Rana Pogag. Among the charges registered, three are non-bailable.

Meanwhile, a telephonic conversation going viral on social media is raising questions about her possible involvement in Rana's crimes. Notably, Rabha was questioned by police on Friday after her name surfaced in the FIRs. It should be mentioned that Rana, who is now being held in judicial custody in Nagaon, was arrested under Indian Penal Code sections 120B, 170, 406, 419, 420, 468, 471, and 472.

SI Junmoni Rabha is the same woman police officer who hit the headlines a few months earlier for getting hold of an MLA and had arrested her fiancé on charges of cheating. Junmoni Rabha, the sub-inspector of Nagaon district only after her engagement learned that he is an alleged fraudster. According to the reports, Junmoni was in a relationship with the accused of over a year and got engaged to him last October. Rana falsely claimed himself to be a Public Relations Officer (Rural) of the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and duped people with lakhs of rupees by promising them jobs and outsourced contracts with the organisation. They were supposed to get married in November but Junmoni learned that Rana duped some people by promising to give them jobs and contracts in the ONGC. She had checked his bag and recovered some fake seals and documents of the ONGC so, she lodged an FIR. Junmoni along with her team seized 11 fake seals of ONGC and many incriminating documents including fake identity cards from Pogag’s home. In January this year, her telephonic conversation with Bihpuria MLA Amiya Kumar Bhuyan got leaked on social media, triggering uproar in social media. The MLA had asked her along with another Assam cop not to harass the people of his constituency who heavily rely on boats for movement in the name of unfit mechanised boat. However, she did not hold back and asked how despite being an elected representative, could ask the police to “break rules and regulations.”

Replying to reporters about how phone record with the MLA went viral she said to that it was 7-8 months old auto audio recording in her phone which Rana intensionally released and leaked it for his personal interest to show my rough and tough image to the persons he was duping. She also alleged that Rana copied her police identity card to get access through toll gates and other policeman family's privileges. Even call recording with the complainant too were viral. 'At one point in time when I realised that Rana possibly is a conman i felt the need to recover their money since they invested on my introduction. Many times Rana made me take calls and reply extension of payment deadlines or lie about his absence. This is how such recordings exists which is now viral.', Rabha said claiming to be innocent and being framed by Rana.

In course of time and legal engagement and courts will decide who is innocent. However trust issues between families lead to filing such case which is going to be web of cases. Some of her friends, colleagues and college seniors are seen lending support to Rabha calling her innocent and straightforward since her childhood and in college.
